This is my first wedding cake using wafer paper flowers and silver leaf. theresa was looking for a vintage looking, delicate cake in a silver, aqua and peachy pink color palette.
Making the wafer paper flowers was a joy. I started with blank sheets of white wafer paper that were colored by printing them with my edible ink printer.
I made three type of flowers: rolled roses, paper punch cutter "ranunculus" and a large peonie. Even though these are very basic wafer paper flowers (on the only one I know how to make!) I absolutely LOVE them.
They are delicate, feminine, vintage looking and SO easy and QUICK to make!
I love my sugar paste flowers, but those are so multi step and time consuming, and being an impatient person, their drying time sometimes kills me :)
Using real silver and gold leaf has been in my bucket list, and with Theresa, I found the perfect excuse to incorporate it to the design of her cake.
Silver and Gold leaf is EXPENSIVE. I planned to use certain amount, and whatever the results, incorporate it in a controlled way. My goal was to attach the silver leaves to a white piece of wafer paper, using piping gel as an adhesive. My first attempts resulted in wafer paper pieces that had gaps, and almost looked like aged/scratched aged sheets...and even though this was not my initial goal, I LOVED the result!
I used most of the sheets that I have prepared; some had a more continuous gilded pattern, and some had medium to large white gaps.
I rarely ever get to see the bride and groom the day of their wedding, but today I had the joy to catch Theresa as she was arriving to the 21C Museum Hotel in Cincinnati. A couple of tears rolled down her cheeks while seeing her cake for the first time.
Making these cakes is an act of love, and moments like these make me forget the havoc that these orders create in my life.
Congratulations Theresa and Josh, I wish you a life of happiness and togetherness.
