We couldn't be more thrilled to have been commissioned this order for the Donor's Inaugural Gala of the new Carol Ann's Carouse, at Smale Riverfront Park. This carousel is a true work of art, and we felt obligated to deliver our very best with our most delicious cake and sugar replica of the Carousel!
To treat these generous donors, we freshly baked three of our favorite flavor combinations: Toasted Almonds with Pistachio and Honey. French Vanilla with Raspberry and White Chocolate. Toasted Almonds with Hazelnut and Chocolate.
The carving and painting of the animals/characters and the creation and installation of the carousel was be done by Carousel Works (Mansfield, Ohio).
The Carousel is located along the Ohio riverfront and between Great American Ballpark and Paul Brown Stadium. It is at home in a large glass enclosed space overlooking the Ohio River and the John Roebling bridge, over the new Anderson Pavillion.
One of my favorite features of the Carousel are the murals that are included on the canopy and the central panels of the core. All paintings were all done by Jonathan Queen, a local artist. In order to reproduce them, we printed them with our edible ink printer over sheets of icing!
We knew that creating a replica of the Carousel would be a time consuming endeavor. In order to reproduce all the different elements, what we did was to create hand sculpted originals in clay, that would be casted in food grade silicone, producing custom molds that we could use to replicate shapes and elements multiple times!!!
A very cool feature of the Carousel is the draping light cables form the canopy to the Crown. We reproduce light bulbs by attaching sugar dragees with piping gel to floral wires that simulate the structural cables that support the canopy!
Along the inner section of the carousel you’ll find “framed” Cincinnati landmarks along with flying pigs. Cincinnati had a long tradition of pig raising and hosts a notorious marathon called "The flying Pig Marathon" . Pigs just happen to be my favorite animal:). These two piggies are originals sculpted in chocolate and hand painted with edible powdered color...but I wish I had casted a mold of them!
The pigs eyes were made out of sugar paste and painted with confectioner's glaze and looked So realistic!
As you may imagine, the making of the characters was the most detailed and time consuming part of the process. They were all made out of a combination of sugar paste and chocolate and were detailed with colored sugar paste and edible powder color. A total of 9 original characters was made, one of them being a horse. We did several variations of the horses and decorated them with characteristic features that would make them identifiable!
Each character within the carousel tells the story of a Cincinnati life or an aspect of Cincinnati history or culture.
